ABOUT TEMP TENNIS
WHAT IS TEMP?
An unparalleled passion for inspiring players to be the best version of themselves both on and off the tennis court whilst creating strong friendships was the founding pillar for TEMP Tennis. We understand that everyone is different when it comes to both personalities and goals. What works for one person might not work for the other which is why we pride ourselves on a highly flexible, player-centred approach whilst also emphasising the importance of two-way communication.
Our coaching program was incarnated off five elements that we believe are pivotal in order to succeed in the modern game of tennis.
Technical:
Our coaching programs aim at teaching, correcting and maintaining proper technique across all shots. This covers biomechanics, weight-transfer and timing. Correct footwork patterns and stances are not left out as this is essential in optimising movement around the court as well as power and stability behind shots. At a more grassroots level this involves developing fundamental motor skills through throwing, catching and kicking activities.
Tactical:
Promoting tactical awareness is something we prioritise from a grassroots level. At a basic level this covers optimal recovery positions for different shots aswell as shot selection and placement for consistency. The two core elements for all sports – time and space are emphasised at a grassroots level through fun games on smaller courts. At a more advanced level tactical play around player specific game styles (counter-puncher, aggressive baseliner, all-courter), competitive patterns of play and forehand-grip variations (eastern, semi-western, western) are emphasised in depth.
Empowerment:
This element is by far, what we believe to be the most important aspect in any child or players life. Not just on the tennis court. As coaches we play almost as an important role as parents in moulding and shaping children’s confidence and personalities. Building self-belief is a major contributor towards advancing kids towards becoming better players and being happier individuals. TEMP Tennis prioritise using strategies such as positive and negative re-enforcement to build good habbits and confidence. Our coaches are not coaches but mentors aswell. If a player misbehaves we try to have a chat with them in private rather than tell them off in front of a whole group as this be very traumatising for the child.
Mental:
An average point in tennis lasts less than ten seconds with rest periods of up to twenty seconds between points. That in itself shows that tennis is very mental. TEMP tennis optimises mental performance through self-awareness helping players perform better during match-specific situations. Our programs teach players how to maintain an optimal state of readiness/alertness through visualisation, breathing and other techniques. Having positive thoughts and saying positive phrases both about ourselves and our friends are taught at the beginning stages.
Physical:
Our coaching programs deliver the appropriate physical conditioning based on the players age, level and goals. At a junior grassroots level most of their fitness should develop through rallying and moving on the tennis court in a fun and engaging environment. At a more advanced level medicine balls, resistance bands and dumbbells are employed to increase power and muscle endurance in players relative to tennis specific movements.
From the days of Andre Agassi and Steffi Graff to Federer and Nadal and now to the next generation era of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz; tennis has changed drastically. Modern sports research has improved the technical, tactical, mental and physical training for tennis players. TEMP Tennis strives to keep up to date with modern research and employ this methodology throughout our coaching program.
